What You Need to Know about Cosmetic Facial Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is a hot button topic right now.  There’s no denying that, really.  Still, it can sometimes be difficult to find reliable information about it.

Despite all the press it gets, a lot of folks out there seem to talk about it negatively.  However, it’s important to understand that cosmetic surgery is something we do for ourselves.  We don’t need to feel pressured by the outside world.

Rather, it’s a process that can improve our own self confidence.  We can make alterations, large or small, to achieve a look that we’re happy with.  If that’s something that appeals to you, then cosmetic facial surgery could be something to consider.

You can read about it here: https://journals.lww.com/plasreconsurg/abstract/2009/06000/a_systematic_review_of_patient_reported_outcome.26.aspx, if you’d like a primer.  With that said, we’ll be exploring some of the key aspects of how it works here today.  Just stay tuned to learn more!

What is Cosmetic Facial Surgery?

Of course, this is one of the biggest questions we need to answer.  There are several different types.  Before we delve into that, though, let’s explore some of the basics.

Facial cosmetic surgery refers to surgical procedures designed to enhance, reshape, or restore the appearance of the face.  They are designed to address a few things.  Namely, improving aesthetic features, correcting deformities, or addressing signs of aging.  Now, let’s look at a few available types.

Facelifts

Here in the UK, these procedures are quite popular.  They are known as rhytidectomies.  Essentially, they’re meant to improve any visible signs of aging in a person’s face or neck.

What might it involve?  Well, some common aspects of the process include removing excess skin, tightening underlying tissues, and re-draping the skin to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

As far as improvements you might notice, there are several.  Facelifts can help reduce sagging skin, deep creases, jowls, and double chin, resulting in a firmer and more refreshed look.  Experts like Georgios Orfaniotis can help describe the process, especially if you’re looking for a surgeon.

Rhinoplasty

Out of all the potential procedures out there, rhinoplasty is one of the most well-known.  Another way to refer to it is as a “nose job.”  That’s probably what you’ve heard of before.

Essentially, it’s a surgical procedure meant to alter the shape, size, or proportions of the nose.  A lot of people get them for cosmetic reasons, but sometimes it is for medical reasons as well.

Of course, we’ll be focusing on the cosmetic aspects here today.  During rhinoplasty, a surgeon may reshape the nasal cartilage and bone.  They may also reduce or increase the size of the nose, refine the nasal tip, or straighten a crooked nose.

The possibilities are endless, in that sense.  You can work with your surgeon to decide what exactly you want out of a surgery like this.  That way, you’ll be happy with the results!

Eyelid Surgery

This is one that isn’t super well-known.  Despite that, you might be surprised by how popular it is.  You can read more about it in this article, in fact.  Another name for this type of surgery is blepharoplasty.

Simply put, it’s a surgical procedure that involves the removal or repositioning of excess skin, fat, and muscle from the eyelids.  This might sound scary, but expert surgeons are able to do this safely.  After all, they have plenty of experience.

There are two types: upper eyelid and lower eyelid surgeries.  The former addresses excess skin and fat that causes drooping or hooded eyelids.  The latter targets puffiness, bags, or wrinkles under the eyes.

Both have their pros and cons, so if you’re ever unsure, just consult with an expert.  They can tell you which option would address your concerns most.  For some, both might be an option.

Brow Lifts

It’s easy to assume that these are the same as facelifts.  However, there are some differences.  Brow lifts are sometimes referred to as forehead lifts.  Either way, you can see that they target a very specific part of the face, rather than the entirety of it.

Typically, the goal of it is elevating the eyebrows and reducing wrinkles, lines, and sagging in the forehead and eye area.  Again, it’s something that promotes a more youthful appearance.  At the end of that day, that’s what a lot of us are after.

Brow lifts can be performed using various techniques.  There is traditional open surgery, endoscopic methods (using small incisions and a camera), or minimally invasive approaches.  If you aren’t sure which would work best for you, you can just ask your surgeon.

Overall, there are a lot of options in terms of cosmetic facial surgeries.  Here in the United Kingdom, there are plenty of expert surgeons able to perform them.  Hopefully, this guide has helped you get some idea of what to look for!
